Weekly World News

[No record of assignment available]

Assignment/Activity Title— Weekly World News
Year— Freshman
Skill— Creative
Portfolio Category— Media & Comm.

This assignment was to create the cover page of a newspaper, such as the Weekly World News (WWN). The WWN focuses on out of this world topics, much like tabloids. Our assignment was to take pictures, and use the techniques we had learned from CAP Photo to effectively Photoshop different, crazy scenarios onto the page. We also had to edit the layout, coloring, and text to make it seem like a professional front page of a paper or magazine.

I chose to do multiple images. As my main story, I took a picture of my friend on the ground, in such a position it looked like he was crawling forward. I took the image at an angle. When I rotated it in Photoshop, it looked like he was climbing the face of a building. I had to utilize techniques I learned to cut the leaves and twigs out of the image, to make it look like a grey building.

As my lower image, I had a picture of myself wearing a fake mustache. I Photoshop-ped myself into an image of a ghetto, but as Mr. Bustillos eventually pointed out, it was more of a Jewish ghetto from WWII times. I obviously couldn’t use that, so I was forced just to blur the background of the original picture and caption it ‘Local Gangster Seen Hanging Around High School.

In this project, I had to work with composition and designing the page, including manipulating text. I had to change various fonts and sizes to match the background: white on black v. black on white. I also had to manipulate text boxes and different designs in order to compose a professional looking, well-lay out front page.

This project taught me that I like working with cameras and angles. This project illustrated my strengths in that I have a creative mind, and I was able to use it. With the magic of Photoshop, there’s no situation out of reach. The only obstacle is that I have issues with working near other people, and I frequently found myself off-topic, chatting, instead of doing work. I realized that this might not be the best idea when I need to get work done, so I isolated myself and listened to music – effectively blocking out other conversations and allowing me to finish my work.

This shows that although it is important to socialize, it’s also an imperative that you manage to finish your work at any means necessary. For me, finishing my work on time for the grade was definitely worth the sacrifice of losing a few minutes of social time.
